Biomonitoring the status of aquatic bodies using zooplankton as surrogate species amidst urban landscape

The concept of surrogates in biodiversity assessments has been widely accepted the recent years. Surrogates are taxonomic groups that indicate overall at a particular site. Zooplankton is an important component aquatic ecosystem, playing major role energy transfer between phytoplankton or producers and consumers higher trophic levels. In this study zooplanktons were considered as for biomonitoring status two bodies amidst urban landscape southern fringes Kolkata, West Bengal, India through different seasons. diversity abundance was found to vary with seasons both ponds correlation limnological parameters. Pond 1 be larger size, having partial macrophyte cover comparison 2 which smaller devoid any over period. elucidated zooplankton water pH phosphate concentration less nitrite concentration. elaborated lower pH, Diversity provided valuable information about can utilised tool biomonitoring.
